The Giving and Receiving Training Provides:
The goal of the Giving and Receiving Training is to teach various applications of Mindfulness and Qigong techniques in a clinical setting to improve resilience and quality of care.
Mindfulness is a meditation practice of being present and observing what is in a non-judgmental manner.
Wisdom Healing Qigong is an ancient system of mindful movements, healing sounds and guided meditations that increases the capacity for self-awareness and presence. (Refer to "About" Wisdom Healing Qigong for information about practices)
You will learn specific Mindfulness and Qigong techniques to:
- Improve well-being and inner resilience: Mindfulness meditation and Qigong quiet the mind, re-focus energy and promote well-being.
- Strengthen the therapeutic relationship (Giving): Applying techniques to monitor self-awareness when interacting with patients increases the capacity for active listening.
- Transform the challenges of complex clinical situations into a deep source of inspiration (Receiving): Observing our experience in a non-judgmental manner when interacting with patients improves the ability to tolerate uncertainty (and anxiety provoking situations), enhances empathy for others and nurtures self-compassion.
Rather than adding to your workload, Mindfulness and Qigong techniques taught in the training work by creating a cognitive shift that counteracts stress and exhaustion and balances your energy.
Why Attend the Giving and Receiving Training?
- Our compassion is manifested in the therapeutic alliance.
- The increasing pace and complexity of our medical system contribute to the disruption of the therapeutic relationship. The "Giving" becomes overwhelming, the "Receiving" is blocked.
- Professional dissatisfaction, disconnection with patients, colleagues and ourselves may occur. This is when we can experience compassion fatigue.
Taking care of patients is both inherently demanding and deeply inspiring. The therapeutic relationship, whether brief or long-term, is a uniquely rewarding dynamic of Giving and Receiving that brings meaning to our work and is essential for successful therapeutic outcomes.
- Practitioners give clinical expertise, and patients receive treatment/therapy
- Practitioners give patients their full attention, and patients give their trust
- Practitioners give unwavering support, and receive a patient's unexpected pearl of wisdom
The increasing pace and complexity of our health care system combined with heavy patient load and daily witness of patients' suffering add to the pressures of providing good care. Professional dissatisfaction, fatigue and sometimes burnout may result. While we cannot alter the challenges of practicing good medicine and/or therapy, we can learn techniques that prevent burnout and improve our inner resilience by staying connected to our patients and to ourselves.
